The workshop “Quality Improvement: A Primer for Palliative Care Educators and Leaders” was facilitated by Prof. Dr. Jose Pereira and introduced participants to the core principles of quality improvement in palliative care education and leadership. The session connected the broader roles of health professionals, including communicator, collaborator, leader, scholar, health advocate, and medical expert, with the need to continuously improve educational and clinical practices. Emphasis was placed on the essential conditions for improvement: effective teamwork, practical tools, and a shared culture of improvement.
Throughout the workshop, participants explored practical quality improvement methods such as the Plan–Do–Study–Act cycle, Fishbone analysis for identifying root causes, Pareto charts for prioritising key problems, and structured approaches for selecting change ideas, including brainstorming, dotmocracy, and the PACE Matrix. The session also highlighted the importance of recognising barriers, enablers, stakeholder involvement, available resources, and readiness for change. By combining leadership, data-informed decision-making, and collaborative problem-solving, the workshop provided palliative care educators and leaders with a practical foundation for designing meaningful and sustainable improvements.
